We drove the
2011 Challenger SRT8 392 on the track last fall, and not much has changed--but what has changed makes the Challenger that much better at hot lapping.
For 2012, the car receives a two-mode adaptive suspension that offers an "Auto" mode that adjusts to road conditions and driver inputs and a "Sport" mode that locks in a higher damping rate for back-road blasting.
The rest of the changes: A new heated Dodge steering wheel with shift paddles for automatic-transmission cars, and an 18-speaker Harmon Kardon 900-watt audio system with GreenEdge technology (basically, the amplifiers and speakers are tuned to use the least amount of energy possible).
There's one big picture change: SRT is now its own brand, with former Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles in charge.
Otherwise, the car remains mostly unchanged from its 2011 update. Specs for the updated 2012 version are as follows: Manufacturer estimated 0-60 time in the high four-second range, manufacturer estimated quarter-mile time of mid-12 seconds (high 12s with the six-speed manual) and top speeds of 182 mph with the manual and 176 with the five-speed automatic. If you're wondering, fuel-economy numbers are 14/22 mpg with the automatic and 14/23 mpg with the stick.
We didn't get any wheel time on the street, but we did get three hot laps a piece in both the manual and automatic transmission cars, and there is a noticeable difference from our last track drive. The last time, we said the car felt more planted and more predictable than the 2010 model. Those thoughts haven't changed. But with the sport mode turned on, the car felt even lighter and nimbler, with the driver able to gain confidence with each lap. It still offers more muscle-car feel than sports-car verve, but it definitely has better dance moves than before, and the available power makes up for any sins the driver may commit upon corner entry. And the brakes are spectacular.

If you want a two-door muscle car with ample interior space, the Challenger may be the only game in town. Reviewers say that it has a bigger back seat and more cargo space than the Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang. However, test drivers also comment that despite its roominess, getting in and out of the rear seat is difficult. But, here we are. The 2011 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak was released today and we're disappointed.

Chrysler's Dodge Challenger muscle car is in trouble. Slumping sales have shown that consumers are not satisfied with the Challenger and would rather choose a Mustang or Camaro.
Chrysler has recently poured a significant amount of money into the 2011 model. The front and rear suspensions have been revamped and re-engineered to improve handling and ride quality. The 1970 Dodge Challenger
In 1900, the Dodge brothers made their first mark making parts for the nascent auto industry. Soon, they were building automobiles and later became a division of Chrysler in 1928.
In the 1970s, multi-carbureted pony car wars were empowered by the 'Win on Sunday, sell on Monday' belief. This resulted in teams in all corners of the motorsports world, including the popular SCCA Trans Am series, to take notice. Dodge entered Trans Am in 1970 with a Sam Posey piloted entry. In the showroom, the Challenger competed against the upscale Cougar and Firebird. It was based on the Plymouth barracuda platform but with a two inch longer wheelbase for more leg room.
The Challenger T/A version came equipped with a 340 cubic-inch engine and a trio of two-barrel carburetors - affectionately known as the '340 Six Pack.' Rated at 290 horsepower, suspiciously similar to the Z/28 and Boss 302, keen observers pegged it closer to 350 horses. It gulped air through an oversized scoop molded into a lift-off matte black fiberglass hood. Chrome-tipped dual exhausts exited dramatically in front of the rear wheels.

MOPAR fans are going to be extremely pleased with the current plans for the 2012 Dodge Challenger, but that may or may not change as the new FIAT-infused management sees fit. Current plans include minor tweaks to the sheet metal, a emblem-less nose, and brand new engines for entry-level and high-end models. All models are expected to hit the streets in late 2011, though the SRT8 refresh might be delayed a little longer as its proposed motor may be scrapped and replaced by a Pentastar-based motor instead. A debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto show is an almost given, especially given the brand’s otherwise minor lineup of new vehicles to debut on U.S. shores. The focus of the debuts in the U.S. auto show circuit are going to focus heavily around the new Pentastar-series motors. It is the Pentastar-class motor that could turn out to be the star of the new Dodge/Chrysler, but purists of the 1970-muscle car may not necessarily be enthralled with the rumored plans to drop the Hemi in favor of blown-V6s and a new Pentastar-based V8.

Current plans include minor tweaks to the sheet metal, a emblem-less nose, and brand new engines for entry-level and high-end models. All models are expected to hit the streets in late 2011, though the SRT8 refresh might be delayed a little longer as its proposed motor may be scrapped and replaced by a Pentastar-based motor instead.

A debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto show is an almost given, especially given the brand’s otherwise minor lineup of new vehicles to debut on U.S. shores. The focus of the debuts in the U.S. auto show circuit are going to focus heavily around the new Pentastar-series motors. Chrysler made waves earlier today when it announced the company would have an armada of 35 vehicles on display at this year's SEMA show, but the star of the shindig is likely to be the new
2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.
While no one has ever accused the Challenger SRT8 of being light on grunt, Chrysler engineers have taken things up a notch or two with a new 6.4-liter V8 that produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, all while delivering 15-20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing 6.1-liter V8 in the 2010 Challenger SRT8. The big V8 uses variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation to help keep consumption low.
The Challenger SRT8 392 also employs a reworked suspension with even firmer shocks, a quicker steering ratio and more negative camber than before, all of which are supposed to help the hefty muscle bruiser tackle the corners with a little more finesse.
Up front, there's a unique chin spoiler that helps channel air to the vehicle's radiator and provide additional downforce at higher speeds. It also just looks pretty dang sharp.
